Visa Information for Tanzania

Everything you need to know about obtaining a visa for your Tanzania safari adventure.

General Information

Most visitors to Tanzania require a visa to enter the country. The process is straightforward and visas can be obtained either online (e-Visa), on arrival, or from Tanzanian embassies. We recommend the e-Visa system for convenience.

E-Visa Application

The Tanzania e-Visa system allows you to apply online before your trip. This is the recommended method as it saves time at the airport.

  • Website: visa.immigration.go.tz
  • Processing Time: 7-10 business days (apply at least 2 weeks before travel)
  • Validity: 90 days from date of issue
  • Payment: Credit/Debit card accepted

Visa Fees

Nationality Visa Type Fee (USD)
USA Citizens Multiple Entry (1 year) $100
UK Citizens Single Entry $50
EU Citizens (most countries) Single Entry $50
Canadian Citizens Single Entry $50
Australian Citizens Single Entry $50
Other Nationalities Single Entry $50

Required Documents

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your stay
  • Passport must have at least one blank page for visa stamp
  • Completed visa application form (for e-Visa or embassy application)
  • Recent passport-size photograph (white background)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or safari itinerary)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if arriving from endemic countries)

Visa on Arrival

Visas on arrival are available at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), and other major entry points. However, we recommend the e-Visa to avoid queues.

  • Payment must be made in cash (USD) or by credit card
  • Ensure your passport photos are ready
  • Have your accommodation details and return ticket ready

Important Notes

Yellow Fever Vaccination: Required if traveling from or through yellow fever endemic countries (including Kenya, Ethiopia, and other African nations). Carry your vaccination certificate.

East Africa Tourist Visa: If planning to visit Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda as well, consider the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) which allows travel between these countries.

Children Traveling

Children under 16 years traveling with parents may be exempt from visa fees. However, they still need to be documented. If a child is traveling with only one parent, a consent letter from the other parent may be required.

Visa Extensions

Single entry visas are valid for 90 days. Extensions can be applied for at the Immigration Office in Dar es Salaam or Arusha. The extension is at the discretion of immigration officials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay for visa on arrival with credit card?

Yes, credit card payment is available at major airports, but it's advisable to carry USD cash as a backup in case systems are down.

No separate visa is needed for Zanzibar - it's part of Tanzania. Your Tanzania visa covers both mainland and Zanzibar.
